I washed these up by hand and memories rushed in of how I used to dip these in starch. I think there is still some old starch in these, as they are still pretty stiff. My sister and I used to dip our net pettycoats in a starch solution in the bathtub (this was in the 50's) and lay them out full-circle to dry. There was prestige attached to how far your pettycoat made your full skirt stick out, so this was really, really important :-)
I like the ruffle on this one. It is like a tutu! I have two of these and remember putting lamps on them.
This one is exquisite! So happy I still have these.

What a fantastic set of memories! I love doilies, especially when I know their story. My grandma Young made me one doilie and I use it. I collect lots of antique linens (mostly for the aprons but there are always doilies in the mix) to use around the house and I wish I knew the stories that went along with some of the huge sets. I have one set of 13 doilies, exactly the same design and color just different sizes. For the life of me I don't know where they would have been used unless you had them in every room in a house. My favorite set is a white and pink set that goes on my dressers/tables in my bedroom (George doesn't even hate them ;o)). You can see one in this picture; http://firebrunette.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/5/23/2972734.html
Yours would look cute in a little granddaughters room, don't you think?? ;o))
I checked out the pink and white set - really nice! Thanks for your comments. I can't believe the memories that rush back when you dig up old stuff! The doilies will definitely be handed down to granddaughters and/or granddaughters-in-law. :-)
